How High to Mount a TV on the Wall
Estimate a comfortable screen position using your TV size and viewing posture. Calculate the bottom, centre and top edges, then review the mounting-height chart and special installation situations.

The rule of thumb: screen centre near eye level
For seated viewing, a useful starting point is to place the centre of the visible screen near the viewer's seated eye height. Measure your own posture rather than relying on a single assumed sofa height.
The TV bracket is not necessarily at the screen centre. VESA hole placement and bracket geometry vary by model; use the manufacturer's installation drawing before drilling.

Special TV mounting situations
Bedroom
Eye position changes when reclining. Measure where your eyes naturally rest on the pillow and consider a tilting mount to angle the screen toward you.
Above a fireplace
A fireplace can force the screen higher than ideal. Check the upward viewing angle from your actual seat and consider a pull-down mount if needed.
Above a console or soundbar
Allow enough room for the furniture, soundbar, ventilation and remote sensor. Confirm clearance with the device manufacturers rather than relying on a universal gap.
Kitchen and standing viewing
Measure eye height while standing and consider the time spent watching in that posture. A smaller screen can be easier to position within the available wall space.
From screen height to wall-bracket position
The calculator reports the visible screen's bottom, centre and top edges. To locate the bracket, measure the distance between the TV's VESA mounting holes and the screen edges using the manufacturer's drawing or the physical set. Do not assume the bracket's centre aligns with the screen centre.
TV mounting height FAQs
How high should a TV be mounted in a living room?
Start by measuring seated eye height and positioning the centre of the visible screen close to it. A typical seated eye height can be around 40–44 inches, but your own measurement is more useful.
Should a bedroom TV be mounted higher?
It may need to be higher because your eye position changes when reclining. Measure your actual posture and consider a downward tilt.
Is it okay to mount a TV above a fireplace?
It can be possible, but the screen may sit too high for comfortable long viewing. Check the viewing angle and consider a pull-down mount.
Does the wall bracket sit at the centre of the TV?
Not necessarily. VESA hole positions and bracket design differ. Use the specific TV's mounting diagram to find the correct bracket location.
